In term 1, our school's theme is My body. Our children in Kindergarten One class will be focusing on the topic 'How does my body work?'. We started the session with a warm-up while listening to a song. The warm up includes action which the children will be using during the activity. This prevents injury during the lesson.

Children will be able to:

  1. Recognise how their efforts affect the way they move. (Effort awareness)

  2. Demonstrate what their different body parts can do and how the parts move. (Body awareness)

Guidance

Guidance is a teaching technique that fosters positive discipline. It involves in setting a clear consistent limit that enhances the independence of the child to achieve his/her social emotional development.

(MgNaughton & Williams, 2009)

Demonstrating

The process of showing children how to use the materials or how to accomplish a particular task. Showing children how to approach a task is an effective way to remind children how to do something they may have forgotten or teaching a new skill.

Demonstrating

Teacher Shaheedah went through the different materials used and how to play the activity. She used gestures, actions and phrases such as "put up your right leg", "hop with one leg up", "jump with two feet". These phrases enable children to be able to visualise and remember better.

Guidance

After the demonstration, Teacher Shaheedah asked if the children have any queries. One of the child expresses how she feels scared as to what will happen if she is not able to complete it. By listening to children's worries, thoughts and interest, Teacher Shaheedah was able to give her confidence and acknowledgement that she will be okay.

Guidance

During the activity one of the child was worried and was being careful about her actions. After her turn Teacher Shaeedah redirected the child’s attention to how she was doing my giving her a high five which helps to boost her self esteem.

After the activity, as they gathered in a circle, Teacher Shaheedah asked if there was anything they were worried of. By watching, listening and learning about the children's thoughts Teacher Shaheedah was able to understand the children better and was also given the opportunity to know more about why are they feeling that way.

By doing so Teacher Shaheedah was able to support children in their long-term success as they build their self-esteem and confidence.
