Space

(What is in space?)

In this lesson, the Kindergarten 2 children learnt about AB and AAB patterns using the planets in space.

The children are first introduced to AB pattern using live examples such as zebra stripes. Moving on to that, we used coloured blocks and ice cream sticks to present an AB pattern. We added more blocks and sticks to extend the pattern. Following that, they are introduced to AAB pattern using the same materials to help them visualize the difference of both patterns.

Following that, they will be extending the patterns on their own through usage of blocks.

Children will be able to:

  1. From a set of AB or AAB patterns using the planets with little guidance.

  2. Name at least 3 difference of AB and AAB pattern.

Teacher Hani showed samples of patterns on a zebra.

Teacher Hani started the lesson by introducing AB and AAB pattern through ice cream sticks and examples of patterns on animals. She then asked open ended questions regarding their past knowledge on AB pattern to clarify. She proceeded to check for understanding by allowing children opportunity to explain and correct her.

Coming close to the main activity, she created opportunity for children to think critically and form their own understandings of what was taught.

During the main activity, Teacher Hani used praise to highlight positive and desired behavior in the classroom. This allows children to model and learn from the example. She also used praised to acknowledge children's effort in recalling what has been learnt in the introduction and usage of materials to help them solve the question. At the end of the activity, she also praised her students for giving feedback to improve the learning experience.

Teacher Hani used praise to acknowledge and acclaim children's effort in recognising AB pattern that was introduced.
